Questions & Answers
The most frequently asked questions about OpenSearch
What is Opensearch?
OpenSearch is an open source search and analysis platform that emerged from the spin-off of Elasticsearch and Kibana by Amazon Web Services (AWS). It enables the search, analysis and visualization of large amounts of data in real time and is often used for log management, monitoring and other data-driven use cases. OpenSearch offers similar functions to Elasticsearch, but is completely open source and available without commercial restrictions.
How does OpenSearch work?
OpenSearch works by storing data in indexes, which can then be searched and queried using a powerful search and analysis engine. It uses a distributed architecture in which data is distributed across several nodes to increase both processing speed and reliability. Users can index data in real time, perform complex search queries and visualize the results in dashboards to gain valuable insights from large amounts of data.
What can I use OpenSearch for?
OpenSearch can be used to efficiently search, analyze and visualize large amounts of data in real time, making it ideal for use cases such as log management, monitoring and security analysis. Companies often use it to gain insights into system and application metrics and to identify and resolve problems more quickly. In addition, OpenSearch can be used to create custom search applications that process and query data from various sources.
What does OpenSearch cost?
OpenSearch is available free of charge as an open source project, so it can be used without license fees. The software itself can be operated independently on local servers or in cloud environments at no direct cost. However, if OpenSearch is used as a managed service, e.g. via NETWAYS Web Services (NWS), fees for the underlying infrastructure, such as storage, computing power and data transfer, are incurred depending on usage.
Is Amazon OpenSearch Elasticsearch?
Amazon OpenSearch is a fork of Elasticsearch, which was created after Elastic changed its license. OpenSearch is based on an earlier version of Elasticsearch and shares many of the features, but is developed independently and offered under a fully open license. While both platforms offer similar search and analytics capabilities, OpenSearch is specifically developed and supported by AWS, while Elasticsearch is developed by Elastic.
Are OpenSearch and Elasticsearch the same thing?
OpenSearch and Elasticsearch are not the same, but they have common roots, as OpenSearch was created as a fork of Elasticsearch before Elasticsearch changed its license. Both offer similar search and analysis functions, but differ in terms of licensing, further development and the ecosystem. While Elasticsearch is developed by Elastic, OpenSearch is a fully open source project supported by AWS and the community.
