Icinga 2 is the foundation for reliable open-source monitoring. However, what the Icinga 2 installation looks like depends on the operating system and the components you actually need. This overview brings together all the step-by-step guides for Icinga 2, Icinga DB, Icinga DB Web, and Icinga Director for Ubuntu and RHEL in one place.

What is Icinga 2?

Icinga 2 is a monitoring solution that checks whether hosts and services are available and running properly. Hosts can be servers, network devices, databases, and applications. Icinga 2 uses checks, collects the results, and detects status changes that can trigger notifications depending on the status.

Overview of the Individual Components

A complete Icinga 2 setup typically consists of four components that are installed independently but work closely together:

  • Icinga 2 performs the actual checks. It stores configuration data and state changes in Redis.
  • Icinga DB is a separate Go daemon that reads these events from Redis and writes them to a relational database.
  • Icinga DB Web is the web front end. It retrieves data from the IcingaDB database and displays it graphically.
  • Icinga Director is used to configure hosts and services. It allows you to manage them in the web interface or via the API. The Director stores configurations in its own database and deploys them via the Icinga2 REST API.
